Canyonlands National Park — Complete Visitor Guide
Utah’s largest national park: four districts, Mesa Arch, Island in the Sky, and how to plan from Moab.
Why Canyonlands?
Canyonlands is Utah’s largest national park — 337,598 acres of canyons, mesas, and buttes carved by the Green and Colorado rivers. It delivers the raw, vast desert grandeur people imagine when they picture the American Southwest, with a fraction of the crowds of nearby Arches.
The park is split into four districts that don’t connect to each other by road, so deciding which one to visit is the most important planning step you’ll make.
The Four Districts
First-time visitors should head to Island in the Sky, the most accessible district, where a paved scenic drive links overlooks like Grand View Point and the iconic sunrise spot at Mesa Arch.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (Apr–May) and Fall (Sep–Oct): The clear winners — comfortable daytime temps and cool nights, ideal for hiking and overlooks.
Summer (Jun–Aug): Very hot, often 100°F+ with little shade. Hike at dawn, carry far more water than you think you need.
Winter (Dec–Feb): Quiet and starkly beautiful with possible snow on the red rock; bring layers and check road conditions.
Getting There & Where to Stay
Moab is the gateway for Island in the Sky and the Needles. From Moab, Island in the Sky is about a 40-minute drive via US-191 and UT-313. There’s no lodging inside the park, so most visitors base in Moab and day-trip in — the same town that serves Arches just up the road.
Where to stay: Moab is the base for Canyonlands and Arches — compare hotels across all the major sites on one map.
Which Canyonlands district should I visit?
Island in the Sky for a first visit — it’s the most accessible (about 40 minutes from Moab), with a paved scenic drive and famous overlooks like Mesa Arch and Grand View Point.
Is Canyonlands worth visiting if I’m already going to Arches?
Yes. They share Moab as a base, but Canyonlands offers a completely different, vaster landscape of canyons and mesas with far fewer people.
Do you need a permit or timed entry for Canyonlands?
No timed-entry reservation is required to drive in; you pay the standard entrance fee. Backcountry trips, river running, and overnight camping do require permits.
