Park City Utah Guide 2026: Skiing, Summer Activities & What to Expect

Park City is Utah’s most polished mountain town — and one of the best ski destinations in North America. The combination of Park City Mountain (the largest ski resort in the US), Deer Valley’s legendary grooming and service, and a vibrant Main Street with genuine mountain character make it a compelling year-round destination. This guide covers what to do, where to stay, when to visit, and how to get the most out of Park City whether you come in ski season or summer.

Park City Skiing: Resort Overview

Park City Mountain Resort: America’s largest ski resort (7,300+ skiable acres) offers every terrain type. The Epic Pass includes Park City, making it accessible for visitors who already ski elsewhere on the Ikon or Epic networks. Best suited for intermediate to advanced skiers looking for variety.

Deer Valley Resort: The only ski resort in the US that doesn’t allow snowboarders (skiers only). Known for meticulously groomed runs, exceptional ski patrol, and high-end mountain dining. Deer Valley consistently ranks among the top 5 ski resorts in North America. The East Village expansion (opening 2025–2026) adds significant terrain. Best for skiers who prioritize service and grooming over terrain parks.

Interconnect: Park City Mountain and Canyons Village are connected via ski lift, giving Park City skiers access to a combined 7,300 acres on a single resort pass.

Park City in Summer

Summer is Park City’s best-kept secret. The crowds are a fraction of ski season, temperatures are ideal (70s and 80s during the day, cool at night), and the mountain activities are genuinely excellent:

  • Mountain biking: Park City has 450+ miles of mountain bike trails. The Trail Network is world-class — Park City hosted the 2002 Olympic mountain bike events. Rent bikes at the resort base or from outfitters on Main Street.
  • Hiking: The same lift system that serves skiers runs chairlifts in summer for hikers. The Deer Valley lift-accessed hiking in particular is excellent for panoramic views with minimal effort.
  • Sundance Film Festival (January): One of the most important film festivals in the world brings Hollywood to Park City for 10 days every January. Tickets sell out fast — book months in advance.
  • Park City Music Festival / Utah Symphony: Summer outdoor concerts with mountain views.

Main Street Park City

Historic Main Street is Park City’s social hub — a genuine mining-town-turned-mountain-town streetscape with excellent restaurants, galleries, and shops. Unlike many resort towns where the main street is a tourist strip, Park City’s Main Street has kept its character. Highlights: Handle restaurant (best fine dining in town), High West Distillery (a working whiskey distillery in a restored livery stable), the Egyptian Theatre (historic venue for Sundance screenings), and Main Street itself for an evening stroll.

Getting to Park City from Salt Lake City

Park City is 30 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport — one of the shortest airport-to-ski-resort transfers of any major North American ski destination. The drive is 30–45 minutes via I-80 East (longer during peak ski weekends). The SLC Express ski bus runs during ski season and is a cost-effective alternative to renting a car or paying for taxi/rideshare.

Best Time to Visit Park City

Ski season (December–March): Peak season for snow sports. December through February is the deepest snow period. March often has excellent conditions with longer days and a more relaxed atmosphere. Book accommodations 2–3 months in advance for holiday periods.

Summer (June–August): Best for mountain biking, hiking, and Main Street dining. Far fewer crowds than ski season. Hotels are significantly cheaper, and the mountain experience is genuinely special.

Shoulder seasons (April–May, October–November): Fewer activities, some facilities closed. Not the ideal time unless you’re after deals on accommodations.

Where to Stay in Park City

For ski access, staying slope-side or within walking distance of the Park City Mountain or Deer Valley base areas is worth the premium. Main Street properties give you the best access to dining and nightlife. Budget-conscious visitors stay in SLC proper and drive/bus to the resorts — this works well but eliminates spontaneous early-morning powder runs.
