Top Things to Do in Salt Lake City
Temple Square
Temple Square is the spiritual and architectural center of Salt Lake City. The 35-acre downtown campus is home to the Salt Lake Temple, the Tabernacle (home of the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir), and multiple visitor centers. Entry is free. Renovations to the Temple itself are ongoing through 2025-2026, but the surrounding grounds are open and worth a visit. Don’t miss the Conference Center roof garden — the views of the Wasatch Front from the rooftop are exceptional.
Natural History Museum of Utah
One of the best natural history museums in the American West. The Utah dinosaur collection is world-class — Utah is one of the richest dinosaur fossil states in the country, and this museum showcases it. The architecture alone (designed to evoke Utah’s geological layers) is worth the visit. Allow 2–3 hours. Located at the University of Utah.
The Great Salt Lake
The largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere is a unique experience — the water is so dense with salt that you float effortlessly. Antelope Island State Park is the best access point: you can swim at the beach, hike to see bison herds, and watch spectacular sunsets over the lake. Note: water levels have declined in recent years; check current conditions before visiting.
Red Butte Garden
A 100-acre botanical garden on the University of Utah foothills with panoramic city views. The amphitheater hosts one of SLC’s best outdoor concert series from May through September — check the schedule and book tickets early if you’re visiting in summer.
Pioneer Memorial Museum
Four floors of Utah pioneer history with artifacts covering the 1847 migration to the 20th century. Free admission. Unexpectedly fascinating even for non-history buffs.
Day Trips from Salt Lake City
Ski Resorts (30–60 min): Park City, Snowbird, Alta, Deer Valley, and Brighton are all within 45 minutes. Salt Lake City International Airport is the best gateway for ski vacations in the country — you can be skiing world-class powder within 45 minutes of landing.
Bonneville Salt Flats (1.5 hours): One of the most otherworldly landscapes in the United States. The vast white salt plain where land speed records have been set since 1914. Best in morning light before the heat shimmer sets in.
Antelope Island (1 hour): A state park island in the Great Salt Lake with free-roaming bison, excellent hiking, and beautiful isolation. The bison herd here is one of the oldest public herds in the US.
Arches / Moab (3.5 hours): A long but worthwhile day trip from SLC. Leave by 5am, arrive at Arches at sunrise before crowds, hike Delicate Arch, explore Canyonlands, and drive back. Alternatively, spend a night in Moab and make it a 2-day trip.
SLC Food Scene: Where to Eat
9th & 9th neighborhood: The most walkable food and coffee district. Independent shops, excellent brunch spots, and a local neighborhood feel that’s a world away from downtown tourist restaurants.
Gilgal Sculpture Garden: A hidden 2-acre sculpture garden in the middle of a residential neighborhood — eccentric and fascinating. Free, self-guided.
Liberty Park: SLC’s largest city park, with a lake, tennis courts, and a free amusement area. The best place to see how Salt Lakers actually spend their weekends.
When to Visit Salt Lake City
Each season offers something different. Winter (Nov–Mar) is prime ski season — snowfall is heavy and reliable, and the mountains are spectacular. Spring (Apr–May) brings wildflowers and mild hiking weather with fewer crowds. Summer (Jun–Aug) is hot in the valley but cool in the mountains — hiking in the Wasatch is excellent. Fall (Sep–Oct) is arguably the best season: cooler temperatures, fall foliage on the mountains, and golden hour light that makes the city look extraordinary.
