How Far Is Zion From Bryce Canyon?

Bryce Canyon is about 84 miles from Zion National Park — roughly a 1-hour-45-minute to 2-hour drive between the two entrances. The route runs east out of Zion on SR-9 through the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel, north on US-89, then east on Scenic Byway 12 to the Bryce turnoff. It’s one of the shortest and most scenic park-to-park hops in the entire Southwest, which is why almost every Utah road-trip itinerary pairs these two.

The drive: 84 miles, two scenic highways

From Zion’s south entrance at Springdale you climb east on SR-9 over the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway, passing through the historic 1.1-mile tunnel, then connect to US-89 northbound at Mount Carmel Junction. At Hatch you turn onto SR-12, one of the most celebrated drives in the country, and follow it to the SR-63 spur into Bryce. Door to door it’s about an hour and three-quarters of actual driving — but plan for two-plus hours with stops, photos, and tunnel waits. It’s the classic leg two of a 7-day Utah national parks road trip.

Budget extra time for the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel

The single biggest variable on this drive isn’t distance, it’s the tunnel. Oversized vehicles — most RVs, large trucks, and trailers — require a traffic-control escort because the tunnel is too narrow for two-way large-vehicle traffic, and you’ll pay a tunnel permit fee (around $15). In peak season the wait for an escort can run 30 minutes or more in each direction, so a “2-hour drive” can stretch well past that if you’re towing or driving a big rig. Standard cars and vans pass through with no permit and no special stop.

What most people get wrong: thinking it’s a quick out-and-back

The common mistake is treating Zion and Bryce as interchangeable neighbors you can “see in an afternoon” between the two. They’re close in miles but very different parks — and Bryce sits much higher. Zion’s canyon floor is around 4,000 feet; Bryce’s rim is between 8,000 and 9,100 feet. That elevation gap means Bryce is 10–15°F cooler, holds snow far later into spring, and can surprise summer visitors with cold mornings and afternoon thunderstorms. Don’t drive over in shorts expecting Zion weather. Give Bryce at least a half-day of its own — sunrise at Bryce Point or the Navajo Loop and Queen’s Garden hike — rather than tacking it on as a two-hour stop. Our Bryce Canyon guide covers the best viewpoints and hikes to fit into that time.

Staying near Bryce? Bryce Canyon City sits right at the park entrance, and Springdale puts you at Zion’s door — book a base on either end of the drive and split the parks across two days.

Frequently asked questions

Renting a car? Most Utah parks trips start in Salt Lake City or Las Vegas — compare prices across every major rental company:

How long does it take to drive from Zion to Bryce Canyon?

About 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours for the roughly 84-mile drive, longer if you hit a wait at the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel or stop along Scenic Byway 12.

What’s the route from Zion to Bryce Canyon?

SR-9 east through the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel, north on US-89 to Hatch, then east on SR-12 to the SR-63 turnoff into Bryce Canyon.

Is the drive from Zion to Bryce Canyon difficult?

No. It’s all paved highway on well-maintained roads. The only catch is the narrow Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel, which requires an escort and permit for oversized vehicles like large RVs and trailers.

Can you do Zion and Bryce Canyon in one day?

You can drive between them and see highlights of both in a long day, but it’s rushed. Most visitors give each park at least a full day, often basing one night near Bryce.

Is Bryce Canyon colder than Zion?

Yes, significantly. Bryce’s rim sits around 8,000–9,100 feet versus Zion’s roughly 4,000-foot canyon floor, so Bryce typically runs 10–15°F cooler and holds snow much later in the year.
