Are There Fish in the Great Salt Lake?

No fish live in the open water of the Great Salt Lake. The main south arm runs roughly 9 to 15 percent salt — three to five times saltier than the ocean — and almost no fish species can survive past about 10 to 12 percent. What the lake holds instead is trillions of brine shrimp and brine flies, plus a few freshwater fish that wander into the shallow, river-fed bays on the eastern and northern edges and rarely last the summer.

The salt math that shuts fish out

Seawater is about 3.5 percent salt. Gilbert Bay — the south arm, the water you see from Antelope Island and from I-80 west of the airport — has run between roughly 9 and 15 percent in recent years, and spiked near 18 percent in 2022 when the lake dropped to its record low elevation of 4,188 feet. The north arm, Gunnison Bay, has been walled off by the Union Pacific railroad causeway since 1959 and sits close to salt saturation; that is the half that turns pink from salt-loving microbes.

Fish fail in that water for a plumbing reason, not a temperature one. A freshwater fish’s gills and kidneys are built to push water out and hold salt in. Drop it into brine and the gradient reverses: water is pulled out of its tissues faster than it can drink to replace it, and it dehydrates in water. Trout and carp flushed down the Bear, Weber, or Jordan rivers into the open lake die within hours to a couple of days.

This was not always true. Fifteen thousand years ago this was Lake Bonneville, a freshwater inland sea roughly the size of Lake Michigan, and it was full of fish. As it evaporated down to today’s remnant, the dissolved salts stayed behind and concentrated. Bonneville cutthroat trout — Utah’s state fish — are the survivors of that lake, still living in the cold tributary streams above it.

Where fish actually do turn up

Fish do appear at the lake’s freshwater margins, seasonally. Bear River Bay, Farmington Bay, Willard Spur, and the river mouths get enough spring runoff to knock salinity down into a range fish can briefly tolerate.

What shows up there: common carp are the most reliable, patrolling the nutrient-rich Farmington Bay mudflats. A small population of yellow perch hangs near the fresher inflows at Bear River Bay. Rainbow trout push in during spring snowmelt and head straight back upstream once salinity climbs in summer. Channel catfish and walleye occasionally get carried down from upstream reservoirs.

None of these are residents. They are visitors riding a seasonal freshwater lens, and the lens closes every summer. There is no sport fishery on the open lake because there is nothing out there to catch.

What most people get wrong: “no fish” does not mean dead

Visitors hear “no fish” and picture a dead lake. It is the opposite, and the absence of fish is the reason.

With no fish eating them, brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) and brine flies multiply to densities a normal lake could never sustain — which makes the Great Salt Lake one of the most biologically productive bodies of water in the hemisphere. That biomass is what draws roughly 10 million migratory birds a year: eared grebes, Wilson’s phalaropes, American avocets, and hundreds of other species staging here on the Pacific and Central flyways. The clouds of insects on the shoreline that everyone complains about at Antelope Island are the visible edge of that food web.

It also supports a genuine industry. Boats harvest brine shrimp cysts — the dormant eggs that wash into windrows on the surface each fall — and sell them as feed for the global shrimp and fish farming business. The harvest is worth somewhere around $40 to $60 million a year to Utah and supplies close to half the world’s supply. The 2025–26 season had brought in about 40.6 million raw pounds of cysts through early February 2026.

The lake is not empty because fish cannot live in it. It is crowded because they cannot.

Where to fish near the Great Salt Lake instead

If you came to fish, four options sit within an hour:

  • Willard Bay — the one that confuses people. It sits directly against the northeast shore of the Great Salt Lake but is diked off as a freshwater reservoir: wiper, walleye, crappie, catfish.
  • Utah Lake — about 45 minutes south of Salt Lake City, freshwater, big and shallow: white bass, walleye, channel catfish, and enormous carp.
  • Jordanelle and Deer Creek reservoirs — 45 minutes east near Park City, for trout, smallmouth bass, and kokanee.
  • The Provo and Weber rivers — blue-ribbon brown and rainbow trout water, both within an hour of the city.
