The Southern Utah Loop: Overview

The standard southern Utah road trip covers the Mighty Five national parks in a rough loop: Zion → Bryce Canyon → Capitol Reef → Canyonlands → Arches. You can start and end the loop from Las Vegas (closest major airport to the southern parks) or Salt Lake City (closest to the northern parks). Allow 7–10 days minimum to do the loop properly.

Day-by-Day Southern Utah Itinerary (7 Days)

Day 1: Arrive Zion National Park
Fly into Las Vegas (2.5 hours to Zion) or SLC (3.5 hours). Arrive in Springdale in the afternoon. Walk the Pa’rus Trail along the Virgin River to orient yourself. Stay in Springdale or Hurricane.

Day 2: Zion Full Day
Start at sunrise for Angels Landing (permit required — apply at recreation.gov) or take the shuttle deep into Zion Canyon for the Narrows. The Emerald Pools trail system works for a half-day. End with sunset from Canyon Junction Bridge. Stay Springdale.

Day 3: Zion to Bryce Canyon (1.5 hours)
Depart Springdale by 8am. Stop at Checkerboard Mesa on the way out of Zion. Arrive at Bryce by midday. Hike the Navajo Loop into the hoodoos (2.9 miles, 550 ft). Watch the sunset from Sunset Point for peak photography. Stay in Bryce Canyon City.

Day 4: Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef (2 hours)
Morning: hike the Fairyland Loop (8 miles) if you have energy, or do the Queens Garden trail (shorter). Drive Scenic Highway 12 — one of the most spectacular drives in the United States. Stop at Grand Staircase-Escalante viewpoints. Arrive Capitol Reef by late afternoon. Stay in Torrey.

Day 5: Capitol Reef + Drive to Moab (2.5 hours)
Morning: Hickman Bridge trail (2 miles, easy, spectacular natural arch). Drive Scenic Drive through Capitol Reef’s Waterpocket Fold. Fruit picking at the historic Fruita orchards (free — only in season). Afternoon drive to Moab. Stay in Moab.

Day 6: Arches National Park
Rise at 4:30am to reach Delicate Arch trailhead at sunrise — the most photographed natural arch in the world, best in morning light before crowds arrive (timed entry required, reserve at recreation.gov). Afternoon: Fiery Furnace ranger-led tour (reservation required) or Devils Garden trail. Stay Moab.

Day 7: Canyonlands Island in the Sky + Depart
Morning at Canyonlands Island in the Sky district — Mesa Arch at sunrise (15 minutes from the visitor center) is one of the iconic images of the southwest. Grand View Point for the full panorama. Depart for SLC airport (3.5 hours) or Las Vegas (5 hours).

Southern Utah Road Trip: Essential Logistics

Permits: Angels Landing in Zion requires a lottery permit through recreation.gov. Timed entry for Arches is required May–October (book 2–3 months in advance). The Zion Narrows requires no permit but timing with water levels matters.

Vehicle: A standard rental car handles all of the roads in this itinerary. Four-wheel drive is only needed if you’re adding dirt roads (Coyote Gulch, White Pocket, etc.). An SUV is more comfortable but not required.

When to go: March–May is the best window — wildflowers at Capitol Reef, manageable temperatures, crowds before peak season. September–October is excellent. Summer (June–August) means extreme heat in lower elevations, full crowds, and permit competition. Winter offers solitude but some roads close.

Camping vs. hotels: Campgrounds inside the parks offer the best experience but book out months in advance. Most travelers stay in gateway towns: Springdale (Zion), Bryce Canyon City (Bryce), Torrey (Capitol Reef), and Moab (Arches/Canyonlands). All have excellent accommodation options.
